About Wheely Accessible

Jayne sat in her powerchair enjoying an accessible lakeside trail, in views of hills and water

Our Story

Hi, I’m Jayne

First and foremost, I’m a proud mum to three grown-up children, each on their own path in life. I’m also lucky to have an incredibly supportive husband, who puts up with far too much… (but don’t tell him I said that!).

We were once just an ordinary family — busy jobs, three young kids, and weekends spent hiking on the local moors. But over twenty years ago, everything changed. After a hospital stay, I never truly recovered and was diagnosed with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). Eight years later, I received a second diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, and with it came increasing challenges like limb weakness, chronic pain, exhaustion, and cognitive difficulties.

Over the years I’ve used many mobility aids, but eventually a powerchair gave me the independence I had been craving. As an ambulatory user, I can still walk a little with crutches, but pushing a manual wheelchair was never realistic for me. Thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and a GoFundMe campaign, I was able to buy my very first powerchair — and it truly changed everything.

That chair gave me freedom. I rediscovered my love of the outdoors, exploring nature, and enjoying time with my family. After a few second-hand chairs and scooters (some more adventurous than others!), I now proudly use a Quantum 4Front 2 — a robust, front-wheel-drive powerchair that handles everything from town pavements to muddy trails. It’s opened up a world of possibilities.

For over 20 years, I’ve also been a passionate paranormal investigator — but I soon realised how inaccessible many old buildings are. That frustration sparked Wheely Haunted, where I worked to raise awareness of accessibility and inclusivity. I even advised a number of historical sites, encouraging simple but impactful changes.

These days, my focus has shifted more towards the great outdoors — my true happy place. There’s nothing better than heading out with my husband, camera in hand, soaking in the views, fresh air, and everything Mother Nature has to offer. This passion inspired the evolution from Wheely Haunted into Wheely Accessible, carrying forward the “Wheely” name but with a new mission: championing accessibility in everyday life and adventure.

I want to see disabled people have the chance to go beyond their four walls, to explore the outdoors, and to enjoy independence without barriers. Accessibility shouldn’t be an afterthought — it should be part of the conversation from the very beginning.

Because I truly believe that change is only ever a discussion away.
